A completely unedited image of the IDEA headquarters in Stockholm last week.
Look at that sky.

So the snow has turned to ice - so its now time to push it off the roofs before it falls and hurts / kills someone.

Good old Swedish logic!

047//365 “Semmeldagen”

Today is Semmeldagen (also known as Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day, Mardi Gras, and Fat Tuesday!)

We decided to make gluten free, lactose free Semlor. They were awesome (but mainly because I had nothing to do witht the baking process!)
…and so the first image of Sweden’s next heir to the throne has surfaced. I’m no monarchist, but there is a certain excitement in the air around Stockholm today since the announcement!

043//365 “Better late than never”

All this going back to school seems to have gone to my head. So much so, that today I managed to justify buying myself my very first fjällräven kånken to carry my books in! Awesome.

042//365 “Högvakten”

On a lunchtime meander around today I was lucky enough to happen upon the changing of the Royal Guards (Högvakten), outside Stockholm’s Royal Palace. According to the commentary, the Royal Guard traces its history back to the early 16th Century, and the unit has continuously guarded the Royal Palace in Stockholm since 1523.

Apparently the duty of forming a “Royal Guard” is bestowed upon all serving regiments but for the most part of the year the duty is being performed by the Lifeguards. I have no idea which regiment made up the guards today, but I enjoyed observing a few moments of Scandinavian pomp and circumstance!

041//365 “Swedish Non Violence”

Today I stumbled upon one of Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd’s iconic “Knotted Gun,” statues in Stockholm. The statue is of a Colt Python revolver with its barrel tied in a knot to symbolise non violence (which is also the name of the piece).

The statue is fairly well known as it also sits outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, and was put there as a gift from the Luxembourg Government. What I didn’t realise until today though was that The same work can also be seen in Stockholm, Berlin, Gothenburg, Malmö, Lund, Borås, Caen and Kirchberg!

I really hope I can see the version at the UN later this year!

040//365 “Worlds apart”

On a stroll home through the park after class today I came across a handful of people taking advantage of one of many outdoor ice rinks for a quick lunchtime skate. Moments later I encountered a whole school of children enjoying a little afternoon sledge.

When I was that age snow meant staying indoors during lunch and watching the janitor salt every surface in sight. There is such a different approach to health and safety here - one that considers that individuals have might have some sort of, I don’t know, common sense?
039//365 “Back to school”

Today maked day one of a one month long haul that is an intensive language course in Stockholm. This was the view I was greeted by front the window of my classroom. Non bad, huh?
